The Super Quick History of Birkenstock

Birkenstock’s history dates back to 1774 with the first groundbreaking innovation from the brand coming from Konrad Birkenstock at the beginning of the 20th century. Birkenstock say that as early as 1983 was when the fashion world discovered the brand and major inroads to the mainstream began. Celebrities and fashion icons helped bring the brand to the mainstream and helped shape Birkenstock into the brand we all know and love today.

What Are The Benefits of Birkenstock Footbeds?

Birkenstock footbeds are made of cork and mould to the shape of your feet over time. This helps prop your arches up, supports your knees and keeps your hips and posture in a natural position. Many Birkenstock shoes also have soft suede or leather linings for extra comfort. The company uses renewable and eco-friendly materials in many of their shoes. How to Style Birkenstocks

For a relaxed look you can pair your Birkenstocks with jeans or shorts and a simple t-shirt. Or, you can dress them up by wearing them with a long dress or smart trousers for a more polished look. Birkenstocks were originally promoted to doctors, so it's no surprise that many nurses & medical professionals buy styles like the Boston, Super Birki, Profi Birki and Birki Air 2.0 for comfort during long shifts.

Choosing the Right Birkenstocks for You

We’ve been matching people with Birkenstocks for over 18 years now and have a tried and tested formula to find the perfect fit (which is going to seem obvious!).

One of the main things to keep in mind when you step on a Birkenstock footbed is that your heel needs to sit in the cup of the footbed. Ideally, you need one half to one finger width spacing between your toes and the cup wall, which is around 10mm to avoid rubbing on your toes.

  1. Measure your foot and confirm your size
  2. Consider your foot shape and width when standing up
  3. Look for a style that matches your foot size and shape
  4. Always, try the clog or sandal on if you can
  5. Feeling good? Everyone has a preference when it comes to fit. Our simple mantra is if it feels right, then it feels right
  6. Waltz out of the store with clouds on your feet

How to Clean Your Birkenstocks

Follow these simple steps to clean your beloved Birkenstocks:

  1. Using a dry and clean soft brush or sponge, lift off dust on the upper or footbed
  2. Using warm water or a cleaning solution specific to the material you’re cleaning to the brush or sponge. If cleaning suede, use a suede cleaner etc. Take a look at our range of cleaning solutions here
  3. Gently brush dirty areas. For stubborn marks you could use a stiffer brush
  4. Once clean, allow your shoe to dry in a shaded place like your garage, out of direct sunlight and heat
  5. Spray a waterproofing spray on nubuck and suede to create a protective barrier
  6. If needed, apply cork renew to the side walls of the footbed (the shiny part) to prevent cracking of the cork

The History of Birkenstock Clogs and Sandals: From Footwear For Physicians to Modern Comfort

Birkenstock has a rich history that dates back to 1774.

An archived church document named Johann Adam Birkenstock as a master shoemaker in the small German village of Langen-Bergheim.

The great grandson of Johannes Birkenstock, Konrad (born 1873), is credited with the first groundbreaking innovation.

Around the 20th century, Konrad developed an anatomically-shaped shoe last with a contoured underside, something completely new in footwear design. The last had a rounded heel, anatomically shaped sole and distinguished between the anatomy of the left and right feet.

This was the birth of the famous Birkenstock footbed the world can’t seem to get enough of.

It wasn't until the 1960s that the brand gained international recognition, thanks to the introduction of the Madrid sandal by Karl Birkenstock, son of Carl Birkenstock.
Like many products ahead of their time, immediate success was hard to come by and the original Birkenstock shoe was no different.

While the mainstream market wasn't ready for this groundbreaking innovation, Like his father and grandfather, Karl found success promoting the shoe to physicians who believed in the idea of foot health.

Success came slowly but sweetly through professionals in the medical and food service industry.

Birkenstock say that as early as 1983 was when the fashion world discovered the brand and major inroads to the mainstream began. Celebrities and fashion icons helped bring the brand to the mainstream which shaped Birkenstock into the brand we all know and love today.

Birkenstock has continued to innovate and expand its range of footwear, including the beloved clogs that have become synonymous with comfort and style.

The Benefits of Birkenstocks Innovative Footbeds: Comfort and Style Combined

One of the key features that sets Birkenstock clogs and sandals apart from other footwear brands is their innovative footbed design.

The brand's signature contoured cork footbed is designed to provide unparalleled support and comfort, moulding to the shape of the wearer's foot over time.

This unique feature not only ensures a customised fit but also promotes proper alignment and posture, making Birkenstock clogs and sandals an ideal choice for those seeking relief from foot pain or discomfort.

In addition to the cork footbed, many Birkenstock clogs and sandals also feature a layer of soft suede or leather, adding an extra touch of luxury and comfort.

The brand's commitment to sustainability also extends to its production processes, with many styles featuring renewable and eco-friendly materials.

With their innovative footbed design and durable construction, Birkenstock clogs and sandals offer a winning combination of comfort and longevity, and can last for years with the right care and maintenance.

More on that later.

Exploring the Versatility of Birkenstock Clogs and Sandals: From Casual to Professional

While Birkenstock clogs are often associated with casual wear, they are surprisingly versatile and can be styled for a variety of occasions.

Whether you're running errands, heading to the office, or enjoying a night out with friends, there's a Birkenstock clog or sandal to suit every outfit and mood.

For a laid-back look, pair your clogs with denim jeans and a simple t-shirt for an effortless, relaxed vibe. Alternatively, dress them up with a flowing maxi dress or tailored trousers for a more polished look.

While the majority of their clogs and sandals feature timeless, neutral designs, there are options for those wanting a little more flavour on their feet. The brand has a range of bright and bubbly colours and lately have been getting super adventurous with their designs. Check out this video at the Birkenstock Studio in London where a number of top tattoo artists were invited to create their own bespoke designs (link).

Many styles are also suitable for professional wear as well, whether that's in the office or in the operating theatre. Originally promoted to physicians and the medical industry, it’s no surprise we've had a lot of nurses and medical practitioners purchase a pair of Boston's, Super Birki's or Tokio's from our store, for supreme comfort during long shifts.

Whether you're on your feet all day or simply want to add a touch of sophistication to your outfit, Birkenstock clogs offer the perfect blend of comfort and style for any occasion.

Finding the Perfect Fit: Choosing the Right Birkenstock Clogs and Sandals for You

When it comes to finding the perfect pair of Birkenstock clogs or sandals, it's essential to consider both style and fit. With a wide range of designs and sizes available, there's a pair of clogs to suit most foot shapes and personal preferences.

We’ve been fitting Birkenstocks for over 18 years and have seen just about every type of human foot try on a pair.

Maybe not EVERY type of foot, but you get the picture. There are a few things to consider if you want to walk out of the store with a great fitting pair of shoes that will last a long time.

The first, most important step is to know your shoe size and have an idea of your feet width before you try. If you’re visiting in store, ask to have your foot measured. When buying online, use a tape measure or ruler to measure both feet and check the Birkenstock guide to confirm your size.

One of the best things about Birkenstock is that they offer a wide and narrow fit, making it a little easier to find the perfect match for your feet.

A question we receive a lot is "are Birkenstocks true to size?"

Shoe sizes vary a little by brand due to the different moulds, shapes and production methods used by manufacturers around the world. While the length of a US10 Birkenstock and Dr Martens boot might be the same, the footbed, shape and materials will feel completely different.

While there’s no black and white answer, Birkenstocks are generally true to size.
Personal preference also plays a big role as some people like additional space between their feet and the footbed lip, while others prefer a snug fit and don’t mind if their feet are close to or touching the lip.

It's worth considering any specific foot conditions or requirements you may have. Certain styles may not suit people with a bunion or really flat feet.
You should also think about the functionality of the clog or sandal that best suits your needs and what activities you’re using them for.

Some styles feature adjustable straps or buckles, allowing for a more secure and customised fit. You might want to slip your Birkenstocks off and on frequently while at the beach, so a style like the Arizona might be perfect for you.

Next time you’re thinking about grabbing a pair of Birkenstocks, following these five simple fitting steps will save you time and give you an accurate fit.

  1. Know your shoe size and foot width
  2. Consider how you’ll be using the shoe and what style fits your needs
  3. Think about your foot shape and what styles might suit your feet
  4. Try a pair on if you can. Otherwise, match your feet measurements to the size guide
  5. Grab yourself a pair!

In our experience, just about everyone can find a pair of Birkenstocks they fit into. But for the few that can't quite feel at home in a pair, don't force your feet into something that may cause discomfort and injury long term.

By taking the time to find the perfect fit, you can ensure that your Birkenstock clogs and sandals provide you with maximum comfort and support for years to come.

How to Care for Your Birkenstock Clogs and Sandals: Maintenance Tips

While your Birkenstock’s might not be the crown jewels, it's still important to follow a few simple care tips to keep them sparkling.

Most Birkenstock clogs or sandals are made with a suede, leather or EVA upper.
Suede is a delicate material that requires regular maintenance to preserve its appearance and texture. The high quality leather that Birkenstock uses will hold up to the elements better than suede but will still benefit from cleaning.

Even though they’re made of ethylene vinyl acetate (think crocs), the EVA Birkenstocks shouldn’t be neglected as they’re also prone to dirt and grime build up.

Just like the upper of a shoe, the footbed also needs attention every now and again to prevent the build up of grime.

Over the years we’ve found that the best way to clean Birkenstocks (and every other shoe) is to use a specific cleaning solution and a brush or a sponge.

A specifically formulated cleaner not only lifts the dirt off your shoe but it will condition and repair the material giving it a fresh out of the box look again.

For example, if you’re cleaning nubuck leather, find a nubuck leather cleaner.
Here’s a few different cleaning solutions you could use that we stock.

This is the easiest way to clean your Birkenstock upper:

  1. Get a soft toothbrush or sponge and cleaning solution specific to the material you’re cleaning
  2. Apply a small amount of cleaning solution to the brush/sponge
  3. Gently massage the area you’re trying to clean
  4. If the dirt is stubborn you can try a stiffer brush
  5. Once clean, allow shoes to dry in a shaded place with good airflow. Direct sunlight can shrink the cork
These instructions don’t necessarily apply to the EVA or Super Birki range as those materials can be cleaned easily with warm water and a sponge or brush.

In addition to cleaning the upper, it's essential to protect the cork sole from moisture and humidity.

To keep your cork in great condition, consider applying a cork sealer to maintain the protective layer from the factory. This ensures the cork looks great and is protected, keeping you wearing your Birkenstocks for longer. If you want to take a look at a cork sealer we recommend, check out Kelly's Cork Renew here.

Applying cork sealer is super easy, follow these few steps:

  1. Clean the cork with a damp cloth removing dirt and dust
  2. Allow to dry completely
  3. Gently brush Kelly’s Cork Renew or your preferred sealer on all sides of your Birkenstock’s. Don’t apply to the underside of the shoe
  4. Allow to dry in a shaded place with good airflow

For further protection, you could also consider applying a waterproofing spray or treatment to your clogs or sandals when you first purchase them. This will help to repel water and prevent stains from forming on the suede or leather.

And if you really want to get the most out of your Birkenstocks, we also advise storing your suede clogs in a cool, dry place when not in use, as excessive heat or humidity can dry out and shrink the shoe over time.

What happens if your furry friend takes a chunk out of your Birkenstock sole?

It is possible to re-sole a pair of Birkenstock’s however, this should only be done by a licenced repairer.

By following these simple care tips, you can ensure that your Birkenstock clogs or sandals remain in top condition.
