In 1901, Shays Shoes was established in West End by Bernard Shay, a boot maker by trade. His brother, Dennis Shay, joined him and together they created a thriving footwear and repair business. Their industrious work ethic and pride in their craft, made the Shay brothers a household name. Even now, customers can recall their parents bringing them in to Shays Shoes as children to buy their school shoes.
Dennis eventually bought the business from his brother Bernard, and Greg, his only son, joined his father to continue growing their long-lasting, prosperous family enterprise. Greg took over Shays Shoes after his father passed on, and enjoyed every moment of it. He will always be remembered as a gentle, kind and friendly man who was passionate about shoes, and his customers.
Wayne, who is Greg's youngest son, accompanied his father in the business since he was a little boy. Today, Wayne manages the business with the help of his wife Moira, and their eldest son Nathan. The Shays have three sons - Nathan, Lucas and Isaac - allowing for maybe yet another generation in this family business.
What we do best
At Shays Shoes we source well-known, quality footwear brands that incorporate style and comfort, while also being ethically made. We are a small business of 3-4 team members, and when you walk into the store you will get personalised service.
Our store is recommended by practitioners, physiotherapists and podiatrist, as we stock orthotic-friendly footwear designed to help give your feet much needed cushioning and support, while keeping your body well aligned. We are fortunate to have loyal customers that come to us from near and far, alongside the support of our locals over the year and word of mouth about our store.
